Carla Ryan - Amy Gillett Scholarship 2007
Carla, originally from country Victoria, now lives and trains in Queensland. She started her competitive cycling career in 2005 after being identified at a talent search program, when was awarded a QAS Talent Search Scholarship. Carla comes from a sporting background in triathlon and running prior to entering competitive cycling.
Carla is currently undertaking studies in Certificate IV Fitness, to complement her day-to-day employment alongside her partner Andrew in his health and fitness clubs, preceding her pro-cycling career. Carla competed internationally for the first time in 2007, when she traveled and raced with the Australian National team. Some of the races included the Montreal Tour and World Cup, Thuringen Tour, Albstadt Tour, World Cup Plouay and Ardeche Tour.
Carla was selected from a strong field of ten applicants for this year's Amy Gillett Scholarship and was chosen based on qualities in the following areas:
- Future development of talent and physiology
- Current and/or previous studying circumstances for furthering career
- Potential to fulfil the Amy Gillett Scholarship through self-confidence, leadership, sportsmanship, charisma, determination and life skills
- Team commitment
- Results to date at a competition both nationally and internationally
- Multiple sporting history, similar to the talents of Amy
Carla now has a full AIS Scholarship in 2008 and will race the whole season in Europe with the National Team. She has had a good start to the season with a 7th in the National Time Trial and 7th in the National Road Title held in Ballarat, January 2008. Carla is excited about racing this year and looks forward to using the experience she gained in 2007. She would love to take it another step further in 2008 and achieve the results required to obtain a professional contract in 2009.
