A MEMORIAL ride for Atherton cyclist and devoted family man, Lindsay Cook, is hoped to attract riders from all over the Far North to help raise cycle safety awareness.
Mr Cook was killed while cycling after being hit from behind by an unknown vehicle on the Kennedy Highway on April 29.
Mr Cook’s wife, Sharen Cook, said since the incident she had become a bit scared of riding, but would brave the memorial ride in the hope that more needless deaths could be avoided. The ride will begin at the Atherton pool on June 6.
Cyclists, under vehicle escort, will ride past the site where Mr Cook was killed, before finishing at the Evans St cycle park.
Tableland Cycle Sports president David Prete said he hoped more than 60 cyclists would take part in the event, including riders from Cairns and and Mareeba where there had also been recent cycling fatalities.
A barbecue lunch will be held at the completion of the ride, with gold coin donations to go towards the Amy Gillett Foundation to promote road safety awareness.
Mr Cook was run down between 5.45am and 5.55am near Tolga.
He died a few hours later in Cairns Base Hospital.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Mareeba Police on 4030 3340 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
