Epic for the Edge

21st January 2010

As first published in "Outer Edge", Australia’s premier adventure and outdoor magazine. www.outer-edge.com.au

Outer Edge will be seen flashing through the wilds of South Africa with news that elite mountainbikers Naomi Hansen and Rebecca Locke will don the Outer Edge colours to race as Team Outer Edge-AGF (Amy Gillett Foundation).

“There’s a chance we’ll get on the podium,” reckons Naomi, “or at least that’s what we’re aiming for.” Fair chance with Naomi taking first elite female placing at last year’s BMC MTB Enduro in Thredbo, NSW, and Locke taking top ten finishes in the BMC and Otway Odyssey.

The Cape Epic (21-28 March) is considered one of the world’s biggest and most challenging multi-day enduros, with 1200 riders pumping out a gruelling 722 km over eight days.

The team is also carrying the Amy Gillett Foundation name on its back, Naomi having ridden from Canberra to Melbourne in November in order to raise money for the organisation, which aims to reduce the incidence of injury and death caused by the interaction between cyclists and motorists. Twenty six other riders also took on the six day ride covering 830km including heading over the Australian Alps. Funds raised went towards a new campaign called A Metre Matters, aimed at getting motorists to provide more room to cyclists on the road.
