Foundation pleads with cyclists to increase vigilance

12th September 2006

The Amy Gillett Foundation has reminded cyclists they are vulnerable road users and must think both for themselves and as a motorist on heavily trafficked roads.

Caution comes following the tragic death of male cyclist who was hit and killed on Kings Way, by a heavy vehicle, late yesterday.

Amy Gillett Foundation General Manager, Melinda Jacobsen, said “we are saddened to hear this news. We’re still dealing with the events on Beach Road a fortnight ago. Our thoughts go out to the family of the cyclist and to the driver.”

“From the information currently available, it would appear this incident is consistent with crash data analysis, recently commissioned by the Foundation, in terms of time of day, age and gender. Full results of that analysis will be released shortly.”

“Cyclists are vulnerable road users who must ride responsibly and exercise caution to avoid serious injury or death. They must never assume they are visible to other road users and must think like a motorist, cyclist and pedestrian simultaneously,” Ms Jacobsen said.

“In promoting a safe relationship between cyclists and motorists, the Foundation seeks to caution both of the need for respect and responsible road use,” said Ms Jacobsen.

The Amy Gillett Foundation was established earlier this year to promote a safe and harmonious relationship between cyclists and motorists through education, awareness and research programs.
