Pedestrian death highlights need for safe cycling message

29th August 2006

The tragic event at the week-end, in which pedestrian James Gould was hit by a cyclist and subsequently died from injuries, highlights the need for cyclists to obey road rules.

Amy Gillett Foundation General Manager, Melinda Jacobsen, said “we are saddened to hear this news. It should serve as a timely reminder to cyclists to ride responsibly.”

“Often the cyclist is portrayed as more vulnerable but this incident shows that cyclists who fail to obey road rules can also cause serious injury or death,” Ms Jacobsen said.

“In promoting a safe relationship between cyclists and motorists, the Foundation seeks to caution both of the need for respect and responsible road use.”

The Amy Gillett Foundation was established earlier this year to promote a safe and harmonious relationship between cyclists and motorists through education, awareness and research programs.
